How the Internet Has Made it Easier for Us to Evaluate a Company or Individual

The days of simply relying on the words of a salesperson in order to evaluate a product or service are thankfully long gone. We no longer are at the mercy of a sales pitch, thanks to the wealth of information available to us via the internet. Sure, we still get sold to all the time. That's not going to change. However, what has changed is that companies can no longer rely on customer ignorance to pull the wool over someone's eyes. A company's reputation can be found online via reviews and testimonials. If they don't have any, then you will surely find a competitor who DOES have its reputation transparently on view to public scrutiny. This is especially useful when you're looking for a highly skilled person - testimonials can reveal any issues, or reassure you that you're in safe hands.

These types of searches don't just apply to looking for a product or a service. Employers too can do some online searches to find out more about a prospective new employee. A CV can only do so much, and of course a CV is very much like the aforementioned sales pitch - it's often not enough to really evaluate someone. Employers can get further insight on an individual via searches on LinkedIn, and other social networks. Of course, these types of searches can raise issues of privacy, so it's important that everybody is aware of the public profile they are creating on the internet.

Having said that, online searches can only take you so far. The public internet is not an exhaustive library of information. Many post an exaggerated version of themselves online, so it can give the searcher a distorted view of that person. When you really need to find out more information than cursory searches on the internet can provide, it's worth considering hiring a tracing company. They have the tools to dig deeper and find the person or company you are looking for.
